Apple and Cinnamon Flapjacks recipe

These are fantastically wintery flapjacks that are also a great way to introduce fruit to a kid's diet.

Ingredients:

250g rolled oats
2 tbsp. sunflower seeds
3 tbsp. golden syrup
115g butter
75g brown sugar
1 tsp. ground cinnamon
2 dessert apples
Topping:
1 dessert apple
3 tbsp. golden syrup

Directions:

1. Preheat the oven to 180C/gas mark 4.

2. Line and grease the insides of a 20cm square cake tin.

3. Heat the syrup, sugar and butter together. Cook until they've all melted and dissolved together.

4. Add the cinnamon and the oats and stir well.

5. Grate the apples, leaving the cores, skin and all into the mixture. Stir these in.

6. Add the sunflower seeds. Give everything a final stir.

7. Press the mixture firmly into the tin and cook for around 35 minutes. Once cooked, leave to cool and cut into squares.

8. To make the glazed apple decoration, quarter the apple, remove the core and slice it thinly. Put the syrup into a saucepan and begin to heat up. Add the apples to the syrup and cook them for around 3-4 minutes, then place a slide on the top of each flapjack.

Variations:

If you're having these as a dessert, try them with custard and a sprinkling of cinnamon.
